1. Role Summary
The Judge holds one responsibility. A student sits an exam. The Judge reads the student's answer, consults a written rubric, thinks about it, and then says one word out loud. That word is the grade. There is no ambiguity in the job description. It fits on a sticky note. We have had it printed on a sticky note.
2. Core Competencies
Attendance: Exceeds Expectations. The Judge was present for all eight nights. It never called out. It never asked for anything. It returned a verdict on every single item it was ever handed, without exception, on time, in the correct format.
Consistency: Exceeds Expectations. Reviewing the eight-night record, the Judge's verdicts show remarkable stability. This was initially logged as a strength. See Section 3.
Accuracy: Under Review. The Judge has never once been correct. Not incorrect. Not miscalibrated. Simply not participating in the category.
3. Notable Incidents
On the ninth night, management reviewed the transcripts rather than the summary scores. This was a departure from prior practice and is not expected to become routine.
The transcripts show that the Judge, upon receiving each answer, would begin thinking. It would think thoroughly. It would think, specifically, by reciting the rubric back to itself, out loud, the way a person rereads the instructions on a tax form for the fourth time hoping the fourth time will be different. Then it would run out of room to think in.
When a machine runs out of room mid-thought, it does not shout. It does not raise a hand. It stops politely in the middle of a sentence and hands you whatever it happened to be holding at that moment.
What it was holding, all eight nights, was a fragment of the rubric. The last word it managed to get out before the wall came down. Our parser, a simple and trusting creature, wrote that word down as the verdict.
So the eight-night evaluation record is not a measurement of the student. It is a measurement of the Judge's available thinking space. That number was 4,096. It needed roughly 6,000. Somewhere in that gap is eight nights of institutional confidence.
Two colleagues in adjacent roles were found to have the identical condition. One of them produced the finding "stage three is the weak link," a phrase management has repeated aloud in meetings for several weeks. Stage three was fine. Stage three has always been fine. The Judge was standing in front of a mirror, pointing at the mirror.
4. Manager Score
Management attempted to assign a score. Management then realized that scoring an evaluator requires an evaluator, and that the only evaluator on staff is the subject of this review.
A larger model has been brought in to supervise the Judge. Fourteen billion parameters. Its sole function is to confirm that the Judge finished its sentence. It has not yet been determined who supervises the fourteen billion parameter model. Every proposed answer opens a new position.
5. Goals for the Next Review Period
The Judge is no longer permitted to trail off. If it runs out of room, it must fall over loudly and on purpose, and announce the exact number of words it got through before it died. Handing a partial thought to a colleague and letting them decide what it meant is now a terminable offense. This applies to everyone.
